In 2005 GarageSkins inc. Founder and product developer Rick Medlen had a modest home built in Creswell, Oregon and really wanted a nice, solid wood carriage house styled garage door. But the best price he could find was $8500, so he did what millions of Americans have done, namely settled for a boring metal overhead door. But his engineering background kicked in and after several attempts, he finally hit on a great solution – real wood veneers bonded to very lightweight underlayments with incredibly strong rare earth magnets inset into the back to make it very easy for anyone to install.

Lots of engineering, prototypes and testing later, we are ready to go to market! Our utility patents are issued, and with 30 million steel overhead garage doors in the U.S. alone, we are primed for great success and are ready to start transforming america’s neighborhoods one garage door at a time.

We are committed to manufacturing our amazing GarageSkins panels in the Pacific Northwest, bringing family wage manufacturing jobs to our economy. We have a strong plan in place, an experienced leadership team, and industry leading manufacturing advisors on our board. We are actively reaching out to investors and partners to move our new solution from the drawing board to reality.

Our Values

Environmental & Social Impact

Helping the Environment

While dressing up a home’s exterior may not seem like a path to shepherding our environment, many of our customers will choose our solution to garage door enhancement over replacement with a real wood or wood-clad door.

This choice will greatly decrease the industry’s reliance on forest-depleting hardwoods being harvested, which is typically sourced from developing nations where oversight is either nonexistent or negligible. Even converting 10% of the existing full-wood garage door sales to an overlay system would save 8,500,000 board feet of harvested hardwood annually. With our softwood, sustainably harvested Alder veneer sourced from farmed forests, we will effectively save 75,000 at-risk rainforest hardwood trees from being harvested every year.

Yet another great environmental benefit of choosing GarageSkins overlay systems over complete replacement is that we keep used garage doors out of the waste stream. Since there is virtually no market for used garage doors, most of the replaced metal doors are sent to a smelter to be reconstituted into “pigs” then sold back into industry. Eliminating the trucking, handling and power usage that are necessary to perform this recycle will help to lower the industry’s burden on our fragile environment.

Helping Humans

With over 20 years of volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity, both in Eugene, Oregon (Board President for 2 years) and at the Oregon state level (Board President, Habitat for Humanity of Oregon) our founder believes strongly in giving a helping “hand up” to those hard-working people that are stuck between social services being available and having enough income to sustain and thrive their families.

To help cure this, as GarageSkins, Inc. becomes successful, we will contribute financially to local Habitat for Humanity chapters throughout our market areas, making contributions based on sales volume. We are excited to use the profits from an amazing company built around an amazing product to reach out and help amazing families grow and thrive!
